Asian Food
Southeast Asian restaurants in Hong Kong serve the very best traditional and contemporary Burmese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malay food. To the uninitiated all of these styles of cooking may seem similar at first. But within a few meals, you'll be able to tell Thai noodles from their Indonesian or Singaporean counterparts.

In Malaysia, Muslim and Malay traditions of curing and flavouring food have combined to create delicious sweet and spicy combinations. Singaporean cuisine adapts the flavours of neighbouring Malaysia to create such popular dishes as Beef Rendang and Singapore Noodles, spicy fried noodles with vegetables, chicken, prawns and beef. Indonesian and Burmese food concentrates on mixing fresh citrus and creamy sauces, with lemongrass and mild korma-type combinations.

Thai cooking makes abundant use of seasonal fresh foods, chilli and coconut milk and focuses on condiments to liven any dish and create great mix-and-match style combinations. Try traditional favourites such as nam pla, a salt substitute made from fermented fish and nam prik, a version of nam pla which is spiced with chopped chillies.
Vietnamese food is often served with fresh ingredients such as lettuce leaves, herbs or rice-flour "tortillas" on the side. You can wrap and season your own, and dip in tasty sauces for meal that is both fun to eat and delicious.

Western Food
As Asia's most international city, Hong Kong has a great variety of restaurants serving almost every style of Western cuisine. French, Italian and German fare is widespread, along with Greek, Mexican and even California-style cuisine. The city has gourmet restaurants (mainly in deluxe hotels), pizzerias and American style fast-food outlets, chic cafes, intimate bistros, gourmet sandwich bars and delicatessens.

Most Western restaurants feature well-stocked wine cellars. Many restaurants have memorable locations, atop the Peak, overlooking ancient fishing harbours, providing panoramic views of Victoria Harbour or alongside a long, scenic beach. Link to Dining Guides.
